At ORSA, we believe in supporting causes that resonate deeply with our values and personal histories. That’s why we were proud to sponsor an inspiring event with Fishing for Forces, a charity close to our Founder & Chairman, Dr. Christian Bucknall and his brother, Director, James Bucknall’s hearts. Their connection runs back generations — their grandfather, Bert, was a WW2 Fireman who lost his leg in service and remained a lifelong supporter of BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association. This heritage fuels our passion to give back to those who have sacrificed so much.

Fishing for Forces is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing a peaceful refuge for those affected by operational duties. Their belief is simple but powerful: time spent by the water, immersed in the therapeutic sport of fishing, can be incredibly healing. Whether someone is returning from operational tours or simply seeking a moment of calm, the charity aims to offer a restorative experience. And it’s not just for seasoned anglers — even beginners can find solace in casting a line and enjoying the serenity of nature.

A Perfect Autumn Day at Manningford Trout Fishery

On October 23, 2025, mentors and guests gathered at the idyllic Manningford Trout Fishery for a day that promised relaxation, camaraderie, and a shared appreciation for service. The morning started with a slight chill, but spirits were high as mentors arrived with equipment, coffee, and good cheer. Guests were warmly welcomed, given safety briefings, and paired with mentors for the day. The weather soon brightened, with the wind easing and glimpses of sunshine, creating perfect conditions for fishing.

Throughout the morning, everyone enjoyed casting lines and sharing stories. Several fish, including a magnificent 6 lbs 8 oz brown trout, were caught, making for some lively competition and plenty of smiles. The friendly banter and teamwork created a warm atmosphere by the waterside.

Lunchtime brought a hearty meal served by Stuart and John, sparking more conversations about fishing techniques, favourite flies, and life stories. The afternoon saw more fishing, with everyone eager to land another catch. Later, everyone gathered for presentations, celebrating the day’s best catches and sharing laughs over playful ribbing. The atmosphere was upbeat, warm, and full of genuine connection.

To cap off the event, each guest received a thoughtful gift from us — delicious chocolate bars and branded ORSA water bottles — tokens of appreciation and remembrance.

A Moment of Reflection

It’s clear that events like these do more than just provide a relaxing escape — they foster community, healing, and gratitude. As we commemorated Remembrance Day during this month of November, let’s take a moment to honour all those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom.

Fishing for Forces exemplifies how a simple act — casting a line — can carry profound meaning. We’re proud to support such an impactful cause and look forward to many more days like this, where connection, reflection, and service come together in perfect harmony.

A special thanks to Bill Howell, the founder of Fishing for Forces, whose vision brought this day to life. We also want to acknowledge the dedicated mentors whose expertise and kindness made the experience possible. And thank you to all the personnel and guests who attended.

If you are interested in sponsoring, participating, or simply want to learn more about this cause, please don't hesitate to reach out to Bill. Join us in making a difference!
